Tramway Glasgow Winter/Spring 2004 Season
video installation
Dates: 31 Jan-13 March 2004
Created over 4 seasons in 2003, Awake2 follows dancer/gardener John Lochrie
on a series of spontaneous interventions into Glasgows green spaces.
This video captures the remarkable presence of Lochrie, in a number of
strangely private transpersonal rites, Odes to the seasonal cycle in the
City.
Trees drawn in frost in winter, dances with a Rowan in spring, this
work reveals a mans love affair with the tree. Elevating, human
and
ultimately fragile.
Awake2 has evolved in association with Indepen-dance, an
integrated dance company based at Tramway with whom Lochrie has
performed for 8 years.
> 'A few years ago, long-standing member of Indepen-dance John Lochrie
> danced with a Birch tree on the land behind the Tramway, for me this
> was a highly evocative act, almost evanescent his action came slowly
> into focus as more people in the building became awake to his fragile
> presence and watched in silence. Here, John became a visible part
of
> the landscape. This is the important work of Indepen-dance, to bring
> members of the community that often appear absent and ignored into
> focus, as movers.
>
> For Awake2, I have followed John to a number of green spaces
around
> Glasgow over 4 seasons. Here I've been witness to a series of private
> rites, made public. The resulting video work furthers this process,
> exposing the actions of a man who is used to inhabiting the edges
of
> this City and now invites you to see him.'
